The Breakfast Shop I Walked Past for Nineteen Years
I never once went in. Then I moved to Switzerland, and it became the only thing I wanted.
This opening paragraph carries the scene: one street, one hour of the morning, and a single concrete detail specific enough that a reader who has never been to Taipei can still picture the corner. It does not begin with a thesis. It begins with a place, because the thesis only earns its keep once the place is real.
The second paragraph widens slightly. It gives the reader the fact they need to understand why the scene matters — here, that the shop had been there for the writer’s entire childhood and was never once entered, which is a fact about the writer rather than about the shop. What leaving does to a street
A section heading arrives early, because a piece that runs more than three paragraphs without a compositional break has already started to look like a wall. The paragraph beneath it takes the scene and turns it once, which is the move the whole department is named for.
Here the piece introduces the second voice: the person who has actually been standing behind the counter for thirty years, and whose account of the same street contradicts the writer’s in a way that is more interesting than either version alone.Source: Told to me bythe owner, who has run it since 1994
The city did not become strange. I did.
After the pull quote the register drops back down. This paragraph is deliberately plainer than the ones before it, because a pull quote borrows attention and the sentences around it have to pay that attention back rather than compete for it.
The piece then places the personal story against something checkable. Twenty-six new international hotels are opening in Taipei across three years.Source: From dataTaiwan Business TOPICS, 2026 That number is not the subject, but it is the reason the subject is worth writing down now rather than in five years, and stating it is what separates a reflection from a diary entry.
What I would tell someone arriving
The closing section does the thing the reader came for without ever having been promised it: one usable instruction, arrived at honestly rather than packaged. It is specific — a street, an hour, an amount of money — and it is not a list.
The final paragraph returns to the corner from the first line and leaves it slightly changed. Nothing is resolved, because the piece is not an argument. It is a second look.
If this changed something for you, tell me. I read every one, and I answer.
